The scenic village of Xagħra is world-renowned for the natural beauty and for the very celebrated historical heritage it offers to whoever decides to visit. Surrounded by three of the most beautiful beaches in Gozo (Ramla Bay, Għajn Barrani and Marsalforn), and by some gorgeous valley systems, ix-Xagħra is the perfect place for those who love long walks or are just fascinated by everything natural or historical.

Due to the many fertile valleys and some of the best agricultural land in Gozo, it is not surprising that this area was frequented by some of the earliest civilizations in human history. The very first signs of human presence in Xagħra are said to have taken place around 6000 years ago and tangible proof of this theory is the extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage Ġgantija Temple complex, which is situated at the outskirts of the village. This megalithic site consisting of two Neolithic stone temples built around 3600 B.C., making them one of the oldest freestanding stone buildings in the world.

Another historical artifact, very close to the hearts of those living in Xagħra, is a medieval chapel, dedicated to Saint Anthony Abbot. It obtained parish status in 1688 and still stands very strong to this very day, with many parochial activities taking place. It serves as a constant reminder of the magical aura of tranquillity Xagħra offers.

A short walk away from this chapel would take those who love to wander around, to the heart and soul of the village. The Xagħra Square, or Pjazza l-Vittorja is renowned for its vibrant and spontaneous nature and to top it all off, one could find some of the best restaurants on the island, overlooking the grand Basilica dedicated to Our Lady of Victory. If you are visiting in summer, make sure to stay over and experience one of the biggest and most popular ‘festa’ in Gozo, which takes place during the first week of September and reaches its climax on the 8th of September.
